Hello, fellow creatives,
I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind lately. The comparison game. If you’re like me, especially when I was starting to learn calligraphy, you know the one! We’ve all been there, scrolling through social media, seeing everyone’s amazing work, and suddenly questioning if we’re doing enough or if our work measures up. It’s so easy to get stuck in that trap, but I had a conversation with another artist recently that reminded me of something I try to practice regularly (I’m not always good at it, but I try): putting on my blinders and staying focused on my path.
When I say blinders, I’m talking about those little panels horses wear to keep them focused on the road ahead instead of getting distracted by what’s around them. Honestly, I think we artists—and especially those learning calligraphy—need our own version of that sometimes. Without them, it’s too easy to lose stride, doubt ourselves, and start comparing every letter or design to what someone else is doing.
I’ve felt it. That little voice that wonders if I’m pricing my work right, using the “right” tools, or if my style is “good enough.” But I’ve learned that putting on those blinders helps me keep my head down and focus on what really matters: my unique journey, my growth, and my creative flow.
Here’s why I think putting on your blinders can make a huge difference:
- Stay True to You: When you’re not constantly looking at what others are doing, you stay connected to your style and voice. That’s the magic that draws people to your work.
- Build Confidence: Comparison can chip away at your confidence, but focusing on what you can do and what you’re working toward builds that self-belief.
- Unlock Creativity: Comparison clutters your mind. Blocking out those distractions helps you dive deeper into your creative flow.
- Get More Done: Less distraction means more focus. And let’s be real, we could all use a little more of that.
This doesn’t mean you can’t support your peers or cheer them on. Please do because it feels so good to lift each other up. But it does mean finding balance, taking inspiration without letting it pull you off course.up. But it does mean finding balance, taking inspiration without letting it pull you off course.
Some tips I’ve found helpful:
Find Your People: Surround yourself with supportive artists who get it. Sharing wins and struggles with others who understand makes all the difference.
Set Clear Goals: Focus on your next steps, whether it’s practicing a new skill, finishing a project, or trying something outside your comfort zone.
Limit Social Media Time: I recently turned off Instagram notifications on my phone. Now I only check it during my own designated time instead of being pulled away by every notification. It has been such a game-changer.
For beginner calligraphy artists especially, these tips can make a world of difference. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when starting out, but putting on your blinders will help you stay focused on improving your skills and enjoying the process.
Most importantly, remember that your creative journey is yours. It’s okay if it looks different or takes longer than someone else’s. The magic is in the process, the little wins, and the progress you’re making every single day.
So here’s your reminder to keep creating, keep growing, and keep putting on those blinders when you need them. You’re doing amazing things, even if they don’t feel big yet.
Keep creating and let’s cheer each other on!
